Tunnel Festival is a fictional techno music festival at the beginning of the summer season in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. At its core, this celebration of music and culture provides a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds and nations can unite, celebrate their differences, and revel in their similarities.
The project’s objective was to devise a visual identity that evokes the dark and subversive elements from the techno scene while adding a fresh spin on it tailored to the digital era. The design system further echoes the festival's message of immersing oneself in the music to find yourself.
The underground community of techno music has traditionally been a space where people can be themselves without judgment. It has become a place where people, especially marginalized groups, can find chosen families and create meaningful connections with others who share their experiences and values. Techno is a genre that often embraces experimentation and breaking boundaries, this resonates with many people who have had to fight against social norms and expectations in order to live their lives authentically. This commitment to self-expression and experimentation has echoed in many areas of the mainstream, innovating and inspiring groups outside of the community.
To highlight all of that in Tunnel’s branding, I played with 2 concepts. The main one consists of a graphic oval shape that symbolizes ripples emerging from a single point (depicting the impacts of this niche, underground community into the mainstream), and sound waves (as it is a festival centered around music), all encompassed into an immersive abstract tunnel perspective.
The secondary concept, expressed mostly through the typography’s straight lines, is rooted in the idea of connectivity and intersectionality, much like a subway tunnel map where different pathways come together at one point. Playing on the idea of an actual underground tunnel community and the connectivity of each one of these different paths.
The rest of the brand system is coated with dark and contrasting colors, especially purple and blue hues, nodding to the festival’s name and the inherent darkness associated with tunnels and techno music. It feels innovative and singular, akin to the techno genre and community. The brand’s voice evokes an ethereal and ominous being calling for you to let go of your own weight and just sink into the music.
